IJmuiden is a North Sea port town in the province of North Holland, positioned at the mouth of the North Sea Canal. Its identity is closely tied to fishing, shipping, industry, and the sea, with working harbors and large vessels forming part of the everyday landscape. The town also has a broad sandy coastline and extensive dunes, creating a contrast between maritime industry and open coastal scenery. IJmuiden is known for its long piers, which extend into the sea and provide views of ships entering and leaving the canal and harbor.

IJmuiden’s development is closely connected with the construction and operation of the North Sea Canal and the growth of its fishing harbor. The town’s maritime heritage can be explored at the Zee- en Havenmuseum, which presents the history of the port and local fishing community. Another important part of the area’s history is preserved in the dunes, where bunkers from the Atlantikwall remain. The Bunker Museum occupies several largely underground structures from the former coastal artillery position at Heerenduinen. Nearby Forteiland IJmuiden is part of the UNESCO-listed Defence Line of Amsterdam.

The coast provides several distinct landscapes around IJmuiden. IJmuiden aan Zee, IJmuiderslag, and Noordpier are the town’s three main beaches, with wide stretches of sand used for swimming, walking, kite surfing, windsurfing, and beach sports. The surrounding dunes connect with Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, where walking and cycling routes pass through coastal habitats. The enormous IJmuiden sea lock is another notable landmark, controlling the passage between the North Sea and the North Sea Canal. Two long piers extend from the harbor area, offering elevated views toward the coastline and shipping lanes.

Fish is central to IJmuiden’s food culture because the town remains one of the Netherlands’ important fishing ports. Fish restaurants, shops, and beach pavilions serve North Sea species and freshly landed seafood, giving visitors a direct connection between the harbor and local dining. The fishing industry can also be observed around the fish auction and harbor areas. IJmuiden has a distinctive character created by this combination of working port, beaches, dunes, military remains, and major shipping infrastructure. Few Dutch coastal towns place such large-scale maritime activity so visibly beside open beaches and natural dune landscapes.
